Special Education

BharatJyoti, with it’s foundation in the year 2000, received it’s legal status as a State Level NGO, being registered under the Rules & Provisions of Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 & continuing residential care special schools in the district of Mayurbhanj under Odisha state with the end objective of bringing feasible improvement in the lives of the persons with disabilities through acquiring skills as basic as activities of daily living & to their integration into regular institutions of learning & society in general.

Basing on the needs of each sub categories of the children with disability, our organisation resolved for imparting Special Education to the children with disability & continued three category of special schools as such :

• 1. Special school for the children with Intellectual Disability
• 2. School for Special Education of the children with Hearing & Speech Disability
• 3. Special school for the children with Visual Disability

Since last 12 yrs, these special schools are continuing in the Sub-Divisional HQ. of Kaptipada Sub-Division at Udala in Mayurbhanj district.

The objective of the special schools are to move towards inclusion of students with disability in regular schools thereby facilitating their integration with mainstream.

The total strength of the special schools year wise from 2007-2008 on words was as such;

1. Special school for the children with Intellectual Disability

The trained teachers & special Educators of special school for Intellectual Disability are doing proper assessment & diagnosing each & every child & indentifying the Psychological & therapy needs of the child & there after placing them in grouping & grades as per the prescribed standards & instructions of National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped. .

The Physiotherapist is giving special inputs for improvement self help skills, communication skills. The part time engaged therapists ie: Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist & Speech therapist are catering therapy needs as well as Psyco-therapy & parental counselling.

To improve Physical activities, dancing, play acting, yoga, martial arts & activities, music & painting & other creative vocational inputs of the beneficiaries the part time yoga / PT / Music Teacher are imparting training.

To create more indoor equipments for Teaching & Training material such as :

• • Large beads (Coloured all sizes 100 each)

blocks (both coloured & non coloured)

• • Metal nails & board kit.
• • Peg board with different shapes
• • Balls – different sizes
• • Toys / other material to provide sensory stimuli
• • Rottle, teethers, toy drums etc.
• • String toys that are pulled (tractors, cars 7 planes)
• • Approximately Rs. 30,000/- to Rs. 50,000/- only
• • Picture & number & number books, colour clay.
• • Percussion instruments, drums, bells, Tape recorder Tapes with music.
• • Montessori equipment
• • Prevocational equipments

2. Special school for the children with Hearing & Speech Disability:

As per the recorded strength of (Table - 1), the children are more emphasised on development of language & communication skills & academicals to lead as normal life as possible through education.

The trained teachers a speech therapist catering their services by imparting knowledge as per age appropriate & pragmatic & assist the children to make use of their residual hearing to the maximum possible extent & also to acquire receptive & expressive language skills.

The students, those who have been admitted in the school on residential are from care 5-18 years of age. The school is attempting integration of the children with regular schools.

3. Special school for the children with Visual Disability.

The main thrust of the special school is to impart special education on communication skills & development of other sensory abilities. Special training on communication & language skills through use of Braille script is continuing. The trained teachers, Instructors & Therapist are providing special orientation education with reference to the Physical, Psychological & Social environment. The special school is barrier & hazard free.

Day Care Centre for PWDs (VIKAAS) :

BharatJyoti being a registered organisation with The National Trust of Government of India continuing a schematic programme of Day Care Centre for the Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation & Multiple Disabilities persons with Disabilities for welfare of PWDs. This programme is continuing 6 hours per day by the staffs of Special Educator with Vocational Training, Physiotherapist / Occupational Therapist, Counsellor, Care giver & Ayah.

The objective of this programme primarily to expand the range of opportunities available to a person with disability attaining the age of 10 yrs. for enhancing interpersonal & vocational skills. The centre also offer care giving support & in addition to that it also helps in supporting family members of the PWDs to fulfil their other responsibilities.

In the year 2016-2017, 2017-2018 & 2018-2019 the beneficiaries have been enrolled in the centre.

This year 2018-2019 the beneficiaries continuing in the centre are as such :

In the year 2017-2018, 19 PWDs have left the centre & have started their own venture & they are now self income oriented.

Care Giver Training (SAHYOGI) :

The schematic Care Associate Training (Sahyogi), programme is the programme of National Trust of Government of India. The objective of the programme is to create & skilled work force to support high need persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation & Multiple Disabilities & their families.

Our Care Associate cell providing 3 months duration primary level courses adequate & nurturing care for Persons with Disabilities & also to their Parents for their care giving.

In the year 2017-2018, 24 persons have been trained by this cell to work both with families of persons with disabilities & for other Institutions like hospitals, schools & NGOs.

The beneficiaries of this training programme were 8th class pass & equivalent. Out of 24 Nos. of candidates, 10 Nos. of trained Care Associate have achieved placement in different homes & work places.

We appeal to benevolent persons, Donors & Corporate houses to support us to create more trained Care Associate / Care giver to help the most needy persons / Senior Citizens of Persons with Disabilities.

Rehabilitative / Therapeutic Service for the Intellectual Disabilities :

In order to ensure proper Rehabilitation of children / persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism & Mental Illness) the Governing Body of BharatJyoti resolved to provide Rehabilitation & Therapeutic Services to children / Persons with Intellectual Disabilities since 1st April, 2016.

In the year 2017-2018 Government of Odisha, Department of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, extended their limited financial support as “Managerial Support’ to meet the operational expenses.

30 Nos. of PWDs had been enrolled to this unit in the year 2017-2018 on Day Care basis & this year 2018-2019, 40 Nos. of inmates with residential care are continuing in the centre & getting the benefit of therapeutical services, ADL, Vocational Training. Day to day improvement is growing than before intervention.
